RE: Larchmont Notes-smoke detectors.
INSTALL SMOKE DETECTORS in your home. Almost everyday, a smoke detector save’s somebody’s life. Yet the Larchmont Fire Department still gets reports that there are homes in Larchmont without operable smoke detectors. Give yourself and your family the advance warning from fire that a smoke detector provides. The Fire Department can assist you. By contacting us at 834-0016, you can arrange a home fire safety inspection.
RE: Larchmont Notes-electrical safety.
The National Fire Protection Association reports electrical distribution and lighting equipment were involved in an estimated 20,900 reported home structure fires in 2005.
By reviewing the electrical safety tips below and taking action, Larchmont residents can help reduce electrical fires in our community.
* If a fuse blows or a circuit breaker trips often find out why and correct the problem.
* Avoid overloading outlets. Plug only one high-wattage appliance into each receptacle outlet at a time.
* Replace cracked and damaged electrical cords.
* Avoid pinching cords against walls or furniture or running them under carpets or across doorways.
* Use extension cords for temporary wiring only.
* Consider having additional circuits or receptacles added by a qualified electrician.
* If an appliance is malfunctioning, unplug it if it is safe to do so. If necessary, cut off power at the fuse panel or circuit breaker.
* Arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) are a new kind of circuit breaker that shut off electricity when a dangerous condition occurs. Consider having them installed in your home.
* Use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to reduce the risk of shock. Your home should have GFCIs in the kitchen, bathroom(s), laundry, basement, garage, and outdoor areas.
* Keep ladders away from overhead power lines including the electrical service into your home. Never touch a power line. This includes power lines downed after a storm. Stay at a safe distance – you could be electrocuted.
* Call a qualified electrician or your landlord if you have discolored or warm outlets, flickering or dimming lights, a tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance or
sparks from an outlet.
